Three alumni and former members of the Mason golf team, Scott Shingler, Jimmy Delp and recent grad Zack Lauzon, have advanced to match play at the Virginia State Golf Association Amateur Championship at Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville. The tournament began with two rounds of stroke play to determine the 32 players who advance to match play. The first round of match play is today and the tournament runs through July 4th.
Shingler, who played two seasons for the Patriots in 1994 and 1995, finished second in stroke play earing the No. 2 seed and will play today against former Patriot Delp. He began the tournament with an eagle and concluded the first round with a 4-under par 66. He carded an even-par 70 in the second round to finish as runner-up, just one stroke behind medalist Addison Coll.
A 2002 George Mason graduate, Delp finished tied for 29th with a 6-over par 146 (74-72). He is seeded 31st.
Lauzon graduated this past May after playing four seasons for the Patriots. He claimed the No. 10 seed for match play after finishing the tournament's two days of stroke play with a two-over par 142 (74-68) and tied for eight. Lauzon will face Keith Decker, who finished stroke play with a 144.
