FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason wrestling interim assistant coach Israel Silva has been hired as a full-time assistant and will remain on the wrestling staff as announced by head coach Joe Russell and the department.
“I want to thank coach Russell for the opportunity to be the head assistant on his staff,” Silva commented. “I cannot think of a better mentor and person to work and learn under.”
“I would also like to thank Director of Athletics Brad Edwards and Deputy Athletic Director Kevin McNamee for their commitment and belief in the George Mason wrestling program. I am excited to continue the progress and development of our current athletes. I am looking forward to moving my family to the great Northern Virginia area.”
"I am excited Israel Silva has lost the interim tag to his title,” Russell added. “He has proven to be a great leader for the George Mason wrestling team. Great things are happening with this program and Israel is an important part of the progress. We are excited to have the Silva family in Northern Virginia."
Silva joined the Mason wrestling staff this past season as an interim assistant. With Silva's assistance the wrestling program recorded its first 10-win season since 2008, qualified two wrestlers for the 2015 NCAA Tournament and had others compete in several national events and tournaments.
