PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Mason rowing finished out the season at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia by making program history. The Freshman 8+ earned a silver medal in the Grand Finals, the highest medal finish for the program in history. The freshmen crew beat out boats from 33 other universities, winning both their heat and semifinal by open water on the field, and was bested only by an undefeated Temple University crew.
The Dad Vail Regatta is the biggest intercollegiate regatta in the world, with more than 120 schools from the United States and Canada competing over the course of the two-day event. This weekend marked the 77th staging of the Philadelphia staple.
“To row up to the awards dock at Dad Vail is an honor in this sport, and one only a small fraction of rowers ever get to experience,” said head coach Ted Nagorsen. “The fact that the youngest members of our squad could come together in a new line up and perform as they did will resonate through this team for years to come.”
The varsity boats also did well. The Varsity 4+ won their heat on Friday, and was just edged out of the finals in a challenging semifinal on Saturday. The Varsity Pair without Coxswain placed well in their Friday heat to also advanced to the semifinals, but was bested by another tough field of fast programs.
