SOFTBALL vs. Fordham
WHEN: Saturday, May 2 at 12:00 PM (DH), and Sunday, May 3 at 12:00 PM WHERE: George Mason Softball Complex RECORDS: George Mason (21-24, 11-9), Fordham (29-18, 14-5) SERIES RECORD: Mason trails 1-3
This is a crucial series with conference tournament implications for the Patriots. Currently, Mason sits in fourth place in the A-10 with the top six teams making the tournament. The Patriots can clinch a spot in the tournament with just one win against Fordham. However, the defending A-10 champions Fordham will be tough opponents and currently are in second in the conference.
The Patriots have had a very successful season after being predicted to finish seventh in the A-10 preseason poll. The Rams were predicted to finish first in the conference, with Dayton currently taking up that spot. The Patriots would have to fall in all three games against Fordham, while UMass and St. Joe's would both have to win all three games in order for Mason to miss out.
Fordham comes into this series having won nine of its last 10 games, with the only loss coming to Hofstra. The Rams are outstanding on offense with five regular starters that bat over .300. Amy Van Hoven leads the group with a .377 batting average on 61 hits. As a team, the Rams have 43 homeruns. The pitching staff is led by Rachel Gillen who is 19-8 on the year with a team-best 2.59 ERA. Gillen helps herself out on offense and currently bats .367 on offense, which is second on the team.
