FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team swept Norfolk State to wrap up non-conference play this season. The Patriots won the first game 8-0 in six innings and then 9-0 in five innings.
It was a pitching duel with three scoreless innings in the first game. Sarah Kleinfelter got the start in the circle for Mason and gave up just three hits and no runs in 4.1 innings. Christina Gabriele pitched the final 1.1 innings and gave up just one hit.
Mason got things going in the bottom of the fourth inning with Liz Seymour scoring on a Spartan error. Mason continued its offensive surge in the next inning and scored four runs after two-RBI doubles from Seymour and Brooke Blankenship.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Patriots added three more runs to end the game thanks in part to RBI's from Sarah Solano and Seymour.
The second game was more of the same for the Patriots; however, this time they got the scoring going earlier. Casey Price and Breanna Boyd each picked up an RBI in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, the Patriots scored four more runs thanks in part to three Norfolk State errors. Seymour, Blankenship, Julia Czarnecki, and Katherine Marsh all picked up an RBI in the inning. A Price double in the bottom of the fourth made it 8-0, Mason. Julia Czarnecki added the final RBI of the game as the Patriots eventually won 9-0 in five innings.
Christina Gabriele pitched a perfect 2.1 innings and picked up the win, while Casey Herring pitched 2.2 innings and gave up no runs as well.
Up next, the Patriots take on Fordham in their final regular-season series with a doubleheader on Saturday, and senior day on Sunday.
