All four seniors registered points Friday as George Mason lacrosse defeated Revolutionary Rival, George Washington, 17-5 on Senior Day. The win move Mason into second in the Atlantic 10 standings, likely securing a spot in next weekend's A-10 tournament hosted by George Washington.
Sophomore Melissa Lobaccaro started the Patriots offense for the day with a goal less than 60 seconds into action. Senior Caitlin McGinn would follow with two goals of her own to put the Patriots up 3-0 with 25 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Patriots would net three more goals before George Washington would get one past freshman goalkeeper Taylor Carpentier making it 6-1 Mason with 13:38 in the half. Senior Kirstin Russell would respond less than a minute later with the first of her two goals, igniting a 6-1 Mason run capped off by a man-up goal from sophomore Jacquelyn Spalding off an assist from senior Mackenzie Jones with just :04 in the half to send the Patriots into the break with a 12-2 lead.
Spalding wasted little time in the second half, finding the back of the net just 40 seconds into action. The Colonials would push back, scoring back-to-back goals to cut Mason's lead to 13-4 with just over 26 minutes remaining. Both defenses held firm over the next 10 minutes of play before Mason senior defender Kate Tangeman broke through the Colonial back line and converted, leading to a running clock for the remaining 15 minutes of action. The Patriots would net three more before GW's Gabbi Hull scored for the third time, securing the 17-5 Mason victory.
Alexa McGovern led all scorers with six points on the day with four goals and two assists followed by Spalding, Lobacarro and McGinn with three points each.
The Patriots conclude the regular season Sunday at Duquesne before turning to post season play.
