To exemplify their commitment off the track as much as on the track, five George Mason track and field student-athletes recently participated in a local community service event by lending a hand at a soup kitchen.
The Patriots assisted at St. Leo's Catholic Church with their annual Lenten Season soup kitchen held at the church for both members and non-members. While at the soup kitchen, Mason helped serve food, distribute utensils and serve drinks while interacting with the attendees discussing George Mason and the track and field team.
“Overall, I enjoyed my experience assisting at the soup kitchen,” commented senior Aneesha Scott. “We were able to help others, while also working as a team off the track. I also enjoyed talking to new people and helping them to understand what we do as student-athletes.”
The student-athletes joined Senior Associate AD, Senior Woman Administrator Sue Collins at the event. Nearly 50 members of the community and church attended the event.
“Athletes can get absorbed in their sport and improving their skills that they forget to give back to the community,” noted Sharon Dorsey, a freshman on the track and field team. “I was very glad that the five of us were able to make time in our busy schedules to give back and I definitely plan on helping with the soup kitchen again, as well as with other community service projects.”
