OCCOQUAN, Va. – George Mason rowing welcomed Delaware and UNC to the Occoquan Reservoir on Sunday for a dual scrimmage. Mason took three of four races against UNC.
“It was a good race for Mason rowing,” stated head coach Ted Nagorsen. “We saw improvements and some good racing.”
Mason opened the morning racing Delaware as UNC competed against George Washington. The Patriots returned to the water in the afternoon to take on the Tar Heels. Four boats raced against each team.
The Varsity 8+ kicked things off in the morning in an extremely tight race as Delaware narrowly captured the race. Mason finished in 6:37.15 behind Delaware's 6:38.46. The Blue Hens would take the next three races over the Patriots.
“Delaware gave us a good push in the 8+,” noted Nagorsen. “I was pleased with how our girls handled a strong challenge and were able to hold them off.”
The Varsity 8+ returned to the water in the afternoon to face UNC, taking the race in 6:28.82 while the Tar Heels finished in 6:26.96. Mason also captured the JV8+ over UNC, edging out the Tar Heels (6:43.50) with a time of 6:39.10. UNC would take the Varsity 4+ race, but Mason rounded out the afternoon with the F/N8+ defeating UNC (7:09.18). Mason finished in 7:01.97.
“The 2V8+ and Freshmen/Novice 8+ both made great strides this week improving over past results against UNC both coming out on top,” Nagorsen stated.
“We are moving in the right direction as a team as we lead into the George Cup next week, and the Atlantic 10 Championship the week following,” said Nagorsen. “We need to keep finding ways to improve over the next couple of weeks. As the season progresses, we need to continue to develop as a team and understand the value of training.”
Mason returns to action welcoming Georgetown and George Washington for the annual George Cup next Sunday, April 26.
