Thirteen Patriots scored as George Mason lacrosse defeated St. Bonaventure 18-9 Friday afternoon in Mason's second annual Light the Night Game in Fairfax.
The Green and Gold wasted little time scoring, as senior Mackenzie Jones converted a free-position opportunity less than a minute into action. Sophomore Melissa Lobaccaro and senior Caitlin McGinn would do the same to put the Patriots up 3-0 with over 24 minutes remaining in the first half.
Mason lead would stretch as far as 10-0 with just under eight minutes to play in the half before the Bonnies would score. The Patriot outshot SBU just 13-10 in the first half, but eight saves from freshman goalkeeper Taylor Carpentier would help send the Patriots into the break leading 12-2.
Senior Caitlin McGinn gave the Patriots their biggest lead, scoring an unassisted goal to open the second half and put Mason up 13-2. The Bonnies would respond, scoring five unanswered goals in over seven minutes to bring the score to 13-7 with 18:57 to go. The Bonnies would get as close as 15-9 with five minutes to play, but the Patriots scored three straight to seal the 18-9 victory.
Lobaccaro led the offense with three goals on the day, while Holly Tevis, Kristin Morgan, Elena Obregon and Hannah Warpinski each scored their first goals of the season. Sophomore Alexa McGovern registered one goal on the day and led the game in draw controls with six.
The Patriots wrap up their regular season next weekend, hosting George Washington Friday, April 24 for Senior Day before traveling to Duquesne on Sunday.
