Sophomore Jacquelyn Spalding registered three goals but it wasn't enough as George Mason lacrosse fell 9-7 at Davidson on a soggy Friday night.
The Patriots got on the board first behind a pair of goals from Melissa Lobaccaro and Spalding less than a minute apart giving Mason a 2-0 lead with under 23 minutes to go in the first half. The Wildcats pushed back, netting four unanswered goals to pull in front 4-2 with 14:38 before the break.
The Green and Gold called timeout around the eight-minute mark and wasted little time as Spalding registered her second goal of the day cutting Davidson's lead to 4-3 with 7:10 to play. Caitlin McGinn followed with a goal off a set piece to knot things up at 4-4 and the teams would head into halftime tied.
After a quiet first half, the teams would combine for five goals in the first six minutes of the second half, ending with the Wildcats holding a 7-6 advantage with 24 minutes remaining. The defensive battle resumed, with neither side scoring until Davidson broke through at the 12-minute mark. The Wildcats would net one more taking a 9-6 lead with 9:38 to play. The score would hold until McGovern would convert for her second goal of the night to bring account for the final score of 9-7.
The Patriots return to Fairfax Sunday when they host Richmond at 1 p.m.
