LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ – Redshirt senior Jake Kettler and redshirt junior Greg Flournoy highlighted a successful day at EWL Championships at Rider University by clinching berths to the 2015 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
As a team, the Patriots finished fifth overall with 78.5 points, an improvement on the team's seventh place finish last season. Edinboro topped Rider for the team championship with 138.5 points.
Flournoy and Kettler each reached the championship match of their weight class before losing and winning again in the true second match to earn an NCAA berth. Kettler returns to the tournament after earning a berth in 2013 and Flournoy makes his first trip after earning the top seed at 157lbs.
Flournoy won his quarterfinal and semifinal matches by the scores of 12-1 and 4-0, respectively, advancing to the finals for a rematch with Rider's Chad Walsh who Flournoy defeated earlier this season. Walsh was able to pin Flournoy in 4:22, however the junior answered back by defeating Edinboro's Chase Delande 5-2 after also defeating him prior to EWL Championships.
Kettler earned a bye in the first round of 285lbs. and defeated Edinboro's Warren Bosch 6-4 to advance to the finals. The senior was defeated by Cleveland State's Riley Shaw but earned the victory over Evan Daley, 8-3, for the true second finish.
In total, all ten wrestlers place in the top six of their weight class. Sahid Kargbo repeated his third place finish at 141lbs. by defeating Rider's Chuck Zeisloft in sudden victory, 3-1. Vincent Rodriguez and Patrick Davis placed fourth at 133lbs. and 165lbs., respectively while Ibrahim Bunduka and Blake Roulo finished fifth overall. Ryan Forrest, Ryan Hembury and Matt Meadows placed sixth.
NCAA Championships take place in St. Louis, MO beginning on Thursday, March 19.
