The women's tennis team battled the temperatures as well as their opponents but came away with a 7-0 victory over the nationally ranked Division III Captains of Christopher Newport.
Mason opened the scoring by wins by Morgan Yang and Marijke Boers at # 1 and Brittany Pilkington and Olivia Lacy-Thompson at # 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead.
Boers earned the first point in singles when her opponent had to retire with an ankle sprain in the fourth game. Jane Awad made quick work of Alexandra Drye by winning 6-1, 6-0 to put the Patriots up 3-0. Pilkington and Lacy-Thompson finished at basically the same time to give Mason their 4th and 5th point to guarantee the win. Esu Erdenebat was the next player finished as she defeated Katie Carlson 6-2, 6-3. The final match on courts was the battle of the #1's. Yang overcame her CNU opponent, Mckinney Harwood in a tie-breaker for the first set and then rolled to a 6-2 second set.
"After a bit of a slow start in doubles I was pleased that we could put things together," remarked head coach Steve Curtis. "It was important for us to establish early leads in our singles matches and we were able to jump to out early and then close out the match."
The women's tennis team will head to Loyola on Tuesday before returning home to host a couple of A-10 matches. The will take on George Washington on Friday and La Salle on Saturday.
