FAIRFAX, Va. – After the George Mason baseball team committed four errors on Tuesday, Brown committed four on Wednesday as the Patriots earned the 6-3 victory over the Bears.
Ryan Ricci made his first collegiate start, pitching the first four innings in a no-decision with two runs allowed on four hits and two strikeouts. Ryan Galvin followed in relief and gave up Brown's third run of the game as he picked up his first win of the season before Mark Maksimow tossed a near-perfect two and one-thirds innings afterwards. Joe Williams threw 18 pitches in the ninth for his second save of the season.
Jake Kalish got things started for Mason with a single through the left side for its first hit of the ballgame in the second inning. Brady Acker followed up with a single and both advanced two bases on Ray Toto's RBI double into right field for the 1-0 lead.
Brown answered in the top of the third for the temporary 2-1 lead before Mason scored three runs on three hits and three errors in the bottom half. Luke Willis singled his only hit in the ballgame to lead off the third and Michael Smith reached base on the first error. Brandon Gum singled home the first of three runs for him to tie the game at two and put runners on second third after another Brown fielding error. Kalish singled home Smith for the 3-2 lead and Acker brought home Gum after he reached base on the third error of the inning.
The Bears made it a one run game in the sixth however Mason put a run right back on the scoreboard when Gum doubled down the left field line, scoring Smith for the second time in the bottom of the inning. Smith ended the day 3-5 and leads the team with a .356 average. Gum also brought home the insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice bunt that scored Willis for the second time. Mason tallied 11 hits while playing error-free baseball.
The Green and Gold host its first Atlantic 10 series of the year this weekend when Saint Joseph's visits from Friday, March 27 to Sunday, March 29.
