Sophomore Jacquelyn Spalding scored five goals as George Mason lacrosse wrapped up non-conference play with a 16-13 overtime win at Longwood Sunday afternoon.
The Patriots (5-3) led 13-10 with 12 minutes remaining in regulation. However, the Lancers (2-7) fought their way back with a 3-0 run, tying the game at 13-13 with just 1:50 to go. Spalding seeked the game-winner with nine seconds on the clock, but a save by Longwood's Christian Acker held the tie and forced overtime.
Neither side would score until a Longwood foul set up a free position opportunity for Melissa Lobaccaro with 1:45 to play in the first overtime. The sophomore would find the back of the net for her third goal of the game, putting the Patriots up 14-13. Spalding would score an insurance goal for Mason with 2:36 to go in the second overtime and Caitlin McGinn would convert a little over a minute later to reach the final score.
Spalding finished with six points on the day followed by McGinn and Alexa McGovern with four, both registering two goals and two assists. McGovern also led the team with three ground balls while Gina Purdue snagged a game-high six draw controls.
Next up, the Patriots open conference play on the road next weekend taking on Saint Joseph's Friday before facing UMass Sunday. Mason returns home to host La Salle April 3 at 3 p.m.
