FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team (6-14) fell to UMass (5-12) in the final game of the first conference series of the season. The Patriots were defeated 9-2, but won the first two games of the series yesterday.
UMass got off to a quick start after scoring three runs in the first inning on a three-run homerun by Bridget Lemire. However, the Patriots were able to cut the lead down to just one in the fourth inning. With Julia Czarnecki on third base, Casey Price picked up the RBI after grounding out to second base. Liz Seymour then hit a RBI-single to left field to score the second run of the inning.
The Minutewomen were then able to score six runs in the sixth inning, thanks in part to a Tara Klee pinch-hit grand slam. UMass eventually closed out the game and won with a final score of 9-2 to avoid being swept.
Casey Herring, Sarah Kleinfelter, and Christina Gabriele all pitched for the Patriots on the day. Caroline Raymond pitched a complete game for UMass to pick up her third win of the season.
The Patriots travel to Saint Louis this weekend to continue A-10 play on Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29.
