Sophomore Jacquelyn Spalding had two goals and two assists but it was not enough as George Mason lacrosse fell 11-7 at home Wednesday afternoon.
Liberty scored first less than a minute into play. However, neither side would score for the next 10 minutes of action, when Liberty took a 2-0 lead with 19:19 remaining in the half. The Patriots responded with a 3-0 run book-ended by goals from Spalding. Fellow sophomore Alexa McGovern also contributed to the run with a goal of her own off an assist from Spalding giving the Patriots a 3-2 lead with 12:52 to play. The Flames responded with two goals in a little over a minute of action to send Mason into the break, down 4-3.
The Patriots would trail 6-3 with 28:33 remaining after back-to-back Liberty goals in the first two minutes of the second half. Sophomore Melissa Lobaccaro would respond with the first of her two second-half goals, the second coming off an assist from Spalding, cutting the Flames lead to 8-5. With less than five minutes remaining, McGovern found the back of the net bringing the Patriots within two, 9-7, but Liberty's Michaela Rich would score twice in the final three minutes to hold on for the 11-7 decision.
Mason returns to the road to take on Longwood Sunday before opening Atlantic 10 play at Saint Joseph's March 27.
