FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team fell to Akron and Georgetown on the final day of the Cherry Blossom Classic. The Patriots stay in Fairfax for the next doubleheader against Princeton on Wednesday this week.
The first game was a pitching duel between Christina Gabriele and Erin Seiler as the game was kept scoreless through four innings. The Patriots were able to pick up two runs in the next inning after Brooke Blankenship hit a two-RBI single to center field.
However, the Zips came back and scored one run in the fifth and one run in the sixth inning to tie the game at two. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Alyssa Nicholas hit a single through the right side for the walk-off single. Akron won the first game with a final score of 3-2.
The Patriots got off to a quick start in the second game after scoring a run in the second inning. Freshman Liz Seymour hit a triple to center field and then McKenzie Jones brought her in to score the run. However, the Hoyas were able to score three runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Georgetown didn't look back from there, and ended up scoring one run in each of the next three innings. Mason scored a run in the sixth inning after another Jones RBI, but it wasn't enough as Georgetown went on to win the final game of the tournament, 6-2.
Casey Herring and Sarah Kleinfelter each pitched three innings in the game against the Hoyas. Megan Hyson got the start in the circle for the Hoyas and picked up her eighth win of the season.
The Green and Gold take on Princeton next in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 18 at 3 p.m. The Patriots also open up A-10 play next weekend with UMass coming to Fairfax on Saturday and Sunday.
