George Mason women's lacrosse edged Wagner 11-10 Saturday afternoon thanks to a last minute goal from sophomore Alexa McGovern to wrap up the Patriots season-opening road trip.
Mason (4-2) and Wagner (2-5) went back and forth for much of the first half, each side tabbing three goals in the first 10 minutes of action. Sophomore Melissa Lobacarro found the back of the net with 5:26 to play in the first half sparking a four-goal Patriot run to send the Green and Gold into the break, up 7-3.
Wagner tabbed three goals in the first three minutes of the second half to cut Mason's lead to 7-6 before sophomore Jacquelyn Spalding would register the Patriots first goal of the second half. Less than a minute later, McGovern converted a goal off an assist from Spalding to put Mason back up 9-6 with 22:02 to go.
After a scoreless 10 minutes from both sides, Wagner cut back into the Patriots lead before Spalding would connect with Wagner once again to put George Mason up 10-7 with 11:23 to play. However, Wagner responded with a 3-0 run to knot the game up at 10-10 with 1:24 to play. Just when it was looking like the game was headed to overtime, Spalding would located McGovern for the third time in the half. Wagner would get a shot off, but freshman goalkeeper would snag her eighth save of the day to secure the win.
McGovern and Spalding each had five goals on the game. McGovern scored five goals on seven shots on goal while Spalding scored two goals of her own in addition to three assists.
