GENEVA, Ohio – Sydney Fisher and Travis Lauri were each crowned Atlantic 10 Champions in the 50-yard freestyle and the men claimed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay on day two of the Atlantic 10 swimming & diving championships in Geneva, Ohio.
Through two days of competition the men remain in third place with 185 points behind UMass and St. Bonaventure (232 points) and the women keep in seventh with 131 points with UMass leading (219 points).
After grabbing the top preliminary time of 22.82 Fisher narrowly missed tying the mark in the finals, finishing the 50-yard freestyle in 22.87 for first overall and an NCAA “B” standard qualifying time along with a new A-10 championship meet record. Lauri had similar success, taking the second-fastest prelim time of 20.16 and becoming the only swimmer of the 50-yard sprint to break the 20 second mark in the finals, finishing in 19.92. The performance was also a B standard qualifying time and only two one-hundredths off of the championship and conference meet record set last year (19.90).
Both swimmers were also involved in the successful 200-yard freestyle relays. Fisher led off the third place-finishing relay (1:33.59) for the women with the help of Kelsey Sorensen, Jill King and Steff Maurer while Lauri anchored the championship-winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:20.30) along with Zepher Begnell, Alec Morin and Jesse Burnley.
A-10 championships continue on Friday, February 20 at the SPIRE Institute. To visit Championship Central, click here.
