George Mason women's lacrosse opens its first season under head coach Jessy Morgan Friday evening at Winthrop. Action is set to begin at 6 p.m.
“I think the whole athletic department is excited for us to start the season; we have so much support around us,” Morgan said. “It is important that we finally begin the process of moving forward.”
Mason lost nine letter winners from the 2014 campaign including Rachel Obregon who led Mason in scoring in both the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The Green and Gold add nine true freshmen in addition to the 13 returning members from last season's squad, which finished 7-9 on the season and 1-6 in conference play.
Senior Caitlin McGinn is the Patriots leading returning scorer, registering 23 goals in 16 games in the 2014 season. Fellow senior Kirstin Russell and sophomore Jacquelyn Spalding also return. The duo contributed 16 and 15 goals respectively last season. Senior Kate Tangeman is the leading returner on defense with seven caused turnovers and 16 ground balls during the 2014 campaign.
The Eagles started their season earlier this month with an 18-5 win at Kennesaw State before falling 20-12 at home to Ohio State. Shannon Gallagher leads Winthrop with eight points and is one of four Eagles with five goals on the season.
Next up the Patriots take on Campbell on Sunday before returning to Mason for their home opener against Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 25 at 5 p.m.
“We have put a lot of energy into this preparation and I want the players to see their hard work pay off," Morgan said. “We just want to show everyone what we can do.”
