Three Mason wrestlers won their matches against Lehigh, however the Mountain Hawks were able to defeat the Patriots 27-9 in the first round of the National Duals in Bethlehem, Pa. on Saturday evening.
Mason moves to 9-10 in duals this year with the loss. Lehigh advances to the next round of the Nationals Duals at the University of Iowa from February 21-22.
After being defeated at 149lbs. to open the dual, Mason tied up the score at three when redshirt junior Greg Flournoy won a 4-3 decision at 157lbs. over Mitch Minotti, an NCAA semifinalist and freshman All-American last season. Minotti is ranked 12th in the NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings while Flournoy earned a spot at 30th.
Patrick Davis gave Mason the lead with a 8-6 decision over Marshall Peppelman at 165lbs. but Lehigh would go on to win the next three matches with a fall and technical fall for a 17-6 lead. Jake Kettler recoded the final victory of the night for Mason, a 3-2 sudden victory over Doug Vallaro, ranked 24th in the Coaches' Panel Rankings.
Mason returns to the mat in Fairfax on Thursday, February 19th when it hosts Grand Canyon University for a 7 p.m. senior day dual.
