Fairfax, Va. - George Mason University swept the Mason Duals by beating Eastern Wrestling League foe Clarion University 22-18, and Grand Canyon University 22-9.
Redshirt freshman Matt Voss(HWT) defeated Clarion's Zach DeLuca in the final match of the dual, 6-5 to give the Patriots their first victory of the season. Voss earned two points on a reversal in the waning seconds and was able to ride DeLuca prohibiting the Golden Eagle from earning a point for escaping which would've tied the match.
Voss used the energy from the crowd for the entire third period which saw the young Patriot come from behind to eventually earn the victory.
Redshirt senior Blake Ruolo(149) won in his first dual of the season by decision, 8-7. Ruolo traded the lead back and forth with Clarion's Brodie Zacherl before finally doing just enough to win.
Against Clarion Mason split the 10 total matches going 5-5, however bonus points during each of the individual duals would be just enough to give Mason their first home victory and first EWL victory of the season.
Two medical disqualifications, one by each squad, made an already intense match even more intriguing with six points being shifted twice in three matches before Voss' late heroics. Voss was later named EWL Freshman of the Week for his overall stellar performance.
"Winning our opening conference dual in the fashion we did, can help this team gel," head wrestling coach Joe Russell said. "A 5-5 split with the winning coming because of bonus points is a positive lesson to learn."
At 3:00 p.m. Mason dominated Grand Canyon, and were able to build an early lead thanks to strong performances by redshirt freshman Tejon Anthony(141) and redshirt senior captain Vince Rodriguez(133).
Rodriguez earned a win by major decision, 14-2, and gave Mason four team points. Mason would take the lead 4-3 thanks to the Fresno, California native and the Patriots would not relinquish this lead for the remainder of the dual. Anthony won by decision 3-2 in a close match and was able to salvage a 1-1 personal record on the day.
"I was pleased guys were able to find a way to win close matches against Grand Canyon." Russell said.
Mason will take the mat at home in an Atlantic 10 battle against Davidson on December, 21. The Patriots will look to keep the momentum going into their next home dual at the RAC with the hopes of getting their record over .500 for the first time this season.
