Rowing Team Participates in Wreaths Across America

On Saturday, December 12, 2015, along with thousands of others, the George Mason rowing team remembered and honored our fallen heroes participating in Wreaths Across America at Arlington National Cemetery.

“Wreaths Across America is an amazing thing to be a part of,” said senior coxswain Caitlin Lucas. “I am always extremely honored to place wreaths and help honor those who have served, especially since my family has friends who are buried at Arlington. I'm glad this year I was able to place wreaths with my teammates. It's not something everyone has the opportunity to be a part of, so it's such a great experience to have Mason rowing participate.”

Prior to the wreath laying, the team was able to meet with Steven Lucas who formerly served in the United States Navy and is currently the Commandant of Cadets for Guardian Battalion of the Bishop Ireton High School Cadet Program to learn more about the tradition and honor of the wreath laying.

“I asked the rowing team to join us this past Saturday for several reasons,” commented Lucas. “From our personal exposure to the team at various team events and regattas, I know that several have personal ties to the military. I also have always been impressed with the teamwork and demeanor of the team. I knew they would treat the event with the level of respect and dignity appropriate in honoring our fallen service members who made the ultimate sacrifice to our nation.”

Each year Wreaths Across America and thousands of volunteers lay remembrance wreaths on over 435,000 gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery. An excess of 60 semi-tractor trucks loaded with wreaths escort the remembrance wreaths from Maine to Arlington. The annual tribute began in 1992.
