A pair of former George Mason Patriots were recently honored by the George Mason School of Business at The Annual Business Alumni Celebration. Martin Dunphy, a men's soccer letterwinner from 1986-89, was selected as the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, while Senior Associate AD Jay Marsh was named one of this year's 20 Prominent Patriots.
Dunphy, a native of Waterford, Ireland, played in goal for the Patriots from 1986-89 and still holds the school record for most saves in a career with 362 in 76 matches. He was a three-time All-CAA First Team selection having received the awards in 1987-89 and was twice-named All-South Atlantic Region in 1988 and 1989. Dunphy also appears in the all-time record book ranking fourth in career minutes with 6861 minutes played in 76 matches. Additionally, Dunphy is tied for fourth in Mason history in shutouts, having recorded 26.5 in his career. In 2012, he established a foundation with the Patriot Club in support of the soccer program.
Marsh began his career with George Mason as a member of the men's basketball program from 1970-72. Since then, Marsh has served in various roles with Mason over a 41-year span. In 1979, Marsh became the assistant athletic director as Mason rolled into NCAA Division I status, a role he served in for eight years until he became an associate director of athletics and director of the Patriot Club in 1987. He spent over eight years in that position before merging into his current role as Senior Associate Athletic Director of Facilities, Events and Championships. Marsh was honored as the Mason Alumnus of the Year in 1989.
