The George Mason men's tennis team participated at the 2015 ITA Regional this weekend at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia. Play began on Thursday and continued through until Sunday.
Four players began on Thursday in the qualifying round. The Patriots Conor Moran earned entrance into the main draw but was defeated in the first round by Temple's Artem Kapshuk, 6-4, 6-1. Guilliano Buzoianu defeated ODU's Glavin and Duquesne's Atkins, but lost to Radford's Taylor, 6-3, 6-4 in the final round of qualifying.
Three Mason players began play on Friday in the main draw, but none advanced in singles action. Top player James Lange was ousted by GW's Cahit Kapukiran, Aaron Capitel lost to William and Mary's Alec Miller and Joe Hill fell to Penn State's Marc Collado, 6-3, 6-4.
The Patriots three doubles teams found some success. Mason's top team of Joe Hill and James Lange had a bye before defeating Saint Joseph's 8-1. UMBC defeated the team 8-6 in the second round. The team of Capitel and Moran earned one of the biggest upsets of the tournament when they took out #3 seeded Virginia, 8-5. The team lost to Penn State, 8-6 in the next round.
Virginia Tech hosted players from 24 teams from around the region including Bucknell, Delaware, Duquesne, Georgetown, George Washington, George Mason, Hampton, James Madison, Liberty, Morgan State, Mount St. Mary's, Navy, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Radford, Richmond, Saint Joseph's, Temple, UMBC, VCU, Villanova, Virginia and William & Mary.
The team has completed its competition for the fall. The spring season begins against James Madison on February 5 at Westwood Country Club.
