FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team was defeated by both Rider and North Carolina at the Recreation and Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Patriots fall to 7-8 in duals this season and move to 2-2 in the EWL with the 25-13 loss to Rider. The Tar Heels were able to defeat the Patriots by the score of 29-6.
Mason started each dual with a 6-0 deficit after forfeiting the 125lb. match in each contest. Greg Flournoy and Jake Kettler each won both of their duals this afternoon while Ryan Forrest and Ryan Hembury also picked up wins in the dual vs. Rider.
Flournoy was able to take down Rider's Chad Walsh 5-1, who came into today's duals nationally ranked. The redshirt junior also earned the 10-5 decision in a back-and-forward match against North Carolina's Robert Henderson. Kettler went on to defeat Rider's Greg Velasco (2-0) and UNC's Frank Abbondanza (7-3).
Forrest took a 10-4 decision over Steven Nelson of the Broncs while Hembury earned his first major decision of the season and second win overall with a 11-0 shutout over Ali Yildiz.
The Patriots return to competition next Saturday, January 31 against conference foe and nationally ranked Edinboro at 7 p.m. in the RAC.
