Chattanooga, TN – Redshirt senior Jake Kettler had the best finish of Mason wrestlers at the 2015 Southern Scuffle this Thursday and Friday, placing eighth overall in his weight class.
After advancing on a bye and falling in first match of the competition, the heavyweight was able to win five consecutive matches in the consolation bracket, two by fall, before being defeated by Riley Shaw from Cleveland State. Kettler moved on to the match for seventh place where he fell in a 5-2 decision to Mimmo Lytle from Kent State for the eighth overall finish, ending his tournament with a record of 5-3.
Redshirt Junior Greg Flournoy also stayed alive for the second day of competition on Friday by earning two decisions in the consolation bracket at 157lbs. on Thursday after winning his first match of the tournament and falling to Jason Nolf of Penn State. Flournoy's competition ended on Friday with a fall from Steven Hernandez of Boise State for a record of 3-2 at the Scuffle.
The Patriots finished 26th overall as a team, accumulating 14 points. Zachary Isenhour and Konbeh Koroma also won at least one match at the event.
Mason returns to dual competition while also beginning the EWL portion of its schedule when it hosts Cleveland St. on Saturday, January 10 at 1 p.m. in the RAC.
