George Mason Athletics Women's Rowing 1/12/2015 2:08:00 PM

Are you a tall, competitive female athlete, but not sure you'd be able to play your sport at the Division I level at Mason? Are you unable to compete in your high school sport any longer because of an injury? Are you still not recruited by a coach in your sport, but can't dream of not being part of a team in college? Then Mason Rowing wants you.

Historically, rowing is a sport built on walk-on athletes: those with no previous experience who picked up the sport as college freshmen. In fact, half of the rowers in the Olympic Champion women's eight in 2012 were walk-ons in college!

Many different types of athletes have characteristics that predispose them to be fantastic rowers. In a sport where leverage is a great benefit, the height and long limbs of volleyball and basketball players allow them to take long, powerful strokes. Swimmers cross over to make fantastic rowers since they are already used to a highly aerobic endurance sport that requires total body strength. And track athletes are incredibly fit, and have the motors that can power them through a demanding 2-hour-long rowing practice.

Athletes in non-traditional sports can be successful at rowing as well. Equestrians, water polo players, ballet dancers, and cross-country skiers all have the kind of core and quad strength that rowers need to be fast on the water.

Come learn how you can walk onto a Division I varsity sport at the Cross-Sport Open House, held at the Field House at George Mason University on February 7, 2015 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. You will meet the coaches, speak with current walk-on rowers, and learn all about the sport of rowing.

Students and their parents are encouraged to RSVP to Coach Katie O'Driscoll at codrisco@gmu.edu.
