Mason Tennis concluded play in the Mason Invitational Tournament with a strong finish. The Patriots won all eight singles matches in afternoon play against Mt. St. Mary's. Overall Mason concluded play going 15-9 in singles and 7-5 in doubles in the round robin format.
Daniel Gutierrez wrapped up an undefeated weekend (3-0) in flight six singles with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win against Brandon Wortkotter of the Mount. The doubles team of Nick Barker and Aaron Capitel also finished 3-0 in flight two doubles.
Tanner Baine, Jimmy Lange, Joe Hill, Aaron Capitel, and Amir Alkhafaji all completed the tournament with a 2-1 record. In the match with Mount St. Mary's Baine defeated Adam Salam 6-1, 6-3 and Lange defeated Mateo De SommoCurcio 6-3, 6-1. Hill's victory came against Peter Salomon 6-3, 6-0 and Capitel beat Darren Mast 6-2, 6-0. In the singles sweep, Barker won 7-5, 6-2; Alkhafaji beat Will Briscoe 7-5, 3-6 (10-3) and Bing Waid defeated Anthony Adams 6-1, 6-1.
Earlier in the day the Patriots swept all four doubles matches with the Mount. In doubles play with UMBC, Mason dropped the one, three, and four doubles. Barker and Capitel scored a win at number two, beating Daniel Grey and Alex Drean 8-6.
“Overall this was a successful tournament,” said coach Quam. “We were able to play, and win, a lot of competitive matches, and that will help prepare us for the regional tournaments to come.”
The Patriots will host the annual Tennis Team Alumni Event on Saturday September 27 at 12:00 pm, before returning to tournament play at the UVA Fall Classic October 3-5.
