The George Mason's men's tennis team opened their season at the Mary Washington Fall Kickoff Tournament this weekend. The starting six Patriots went 10-2 in singles and 6-3 in doubles.
Joe Hill went undefeated this weekend, winning two singles and three doubles matches. Hill partnered with Jimmy Lange to sweep the first flight doubles with wins against the CNU team of Max Katcher and Chiraag Shetty (8-0); Evan Charles and Stratton Gilmore of Mary Washington (8-5); and Sebastian Sikh and Mike Konnov of NC Wesleyan (8-4). Playing second flight singles Hill scored wins over Konnov (6-4, 6-2), and Rob Kjellberg (6-7 (7-2), 6-2, 6-3) of NC Wesleyan.
In the first flight singles draw Tanner Baine went undefeated, winning 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) against Sikh and 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 versus Michael Holt of Washington & Lee.
Aaron Capitel and Daniel Gutierrez also captured two singles wins. In flight two Capitel beat Mary Washington's David Lunding-Johannson 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Jordan Krasner of Washington & Lee 4-6 7-6 (7-1), 6-4. In flight three Gutierrez scored wins against Thomas Johnson of Washington & Lee (7-5, 6-0) and Chiraag Shetty (6-3, 6-3).
“We had a good start to the fall season this weekend,” said coach Quam. “In addition to the the individual achievements the team did very well overall.”
The Patriots will next play host at the Mason Invitational tournament on September 20 and 21. Participating teams are UMBC, Mt. Saint Mary's and Mary Washington. Matches begin at 10:00 am both days.
