The George Mason men's golf team opened the 2014-15 season today at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. The Patriots carded a team 297 at the 54-hole tournament and currently stand in 15th place in the 18-team event, two strokes behind UNCW and within six strokes of Elon and Maryland.
Captain Zack Lauzon leads Mason after the first round shooting even par at the par 72 UNC Finley Golf Course. The Patriots teed off this morning on the back nine and the senior began the season with two bogeys on the first three holes. He came back strong finishing the nine with five pars and one birdie to make the turn at one-over. He birdied two of the last three holes of the round to get to even par.
Freshman Brock Kovach making his collegiate debut opened with six straight pars before recording bogeys on four of his next five holes. The Wyossiming, Pa. native responded with an eagle on the par 5 hole #3, one of seven eagles recorded in the field today. He finished with five straight pars and a birdie on the final hole to score a one-over par 73.
Sophomore Kyle Hart recorded four birdies and four bogeys, but a double-bogey on the par 3 fifth hole left him with a two-over par 74. Freshman Ellis Messian rounded out the scoring with a six-over par. He carded four bogeys on his first eight holes, and then recorded eight straight pars before bogeys on last two holes.
Mason will tee it up for round two on Saturday morning, beginning at 8 am.
