FAIRFAX, VA.—George Mason University had three of its teams earn national recognition from the NCAA in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) the NCAA announced Wednesday. Two Mason teams, women's swimming, women's volleyball, were recognized for the third straight year and men's tennis earned its first.

The programs posted a four-year APR score in the top 10 percent nationally for their respective sport through the 2012-13 academic year. This year's awards are compiled using the academic and retention rates for the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years.

Mason's teams have received the academic honor each year since the inception of the academic reform program ten years ago. Women's tennis leads the way with four awards followed by men's basketball, women's swimming and women's volleyball each with three.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship.  The APR retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

The Atlantic 10 ranked fifth in number of teams recognized among 31 Division I leagues. Because the APR totals are based on the previous year's data, Mason's count towards the CAA's total this year. In last year's report, the A-10 ranked fifth among all conferences. The league also ranked fifth in the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate, which was released last fall. The NCAA will release this year's full APR report, with the most recent data on May 14.
