OCCOQUAN, Va. – Competing in its first-ever Atlantic 10 Championships on Sunday, the George Mason rowing team placed eighth. The championship was held on the Occoquan Reservoir.
Preliminary heats opened the competition in the morning with the top three boats advancing to the grand finals and the remaining teams reaching the petite finals. The varsity four kicked things off finishing third to move onto the grand finals. Mason crossed in 8:57.11 as UMass claimed the top spot in 8:20.50. Duquesne took second in 8:47.51.
Mason reached the petite finals in the second varsity eight after the Patriots took fifth in the preliminary heat. Mason crossed in 8:16.50, while Rhode Island finished first in 7:29.00. In the final heat event, Mason's varsity eight also reached the petite final finishing fourth in its heat in 7:40.58. UMass, George Washington and Saint Joseph's advanced to the grand final claiming the top three spots.
Returning for the grand final, the varsity four took fifth-place with a time of 9:06.76. UMass took first-place in 8:23.50, while Rhode Island, George Washington and Duquesne claimed the next three finishes.
Mason's second varsity eight took the top spot in the petite final, beating Dayton and La Salle. The Patriots crossed the finish line in 8:14.30.
In the final event of the afternoon, the varsity eight finished second in its petite final in 7:56.79. Fordham finished first in 7:46.30, while La Salle claimed third in 8:13.73.
As part of the awards ceremony, the All-Conference teams were announced based on a vote of the league's head coaches. Senior Cassie Robbins was named to the Second Team.
