The Mason golf team participated in the one-day Liberty University Match Play Invitational at Poplar Grove Golf Course in Amherst, Va. The one-day match play featured two sessions of golf between four in-state programs: George Mason, James Madison, Liberty and Radford.
The Patriots were paired up against host Liberty in the morning round. The teams battled in cool temperatures and brisk wind but the Flames won the match 5-1. The Patriots Andrew Brenneman defeated Jacob Mast 2 Up to give Mason it's lone point. Liberty received its first point of the match play event when B.J. Kuhn won his match over Wes Liu, 9 & 7, capped off by Kuhn chipping in for eagle on the par-5, 524-yard No. 12 hole.
Libery's Mathieu Fenasse was three-up after six holes of play after getting up and down near the green at the par-5, No. 6 hole. The junior closed out his match by birdieing the par-4, No. 14 hole to down Mason's Mark Folkwein.
Mason's Kyle Hart squared his match up at the par-3, No. 13 hole after being down three to Ian McConnell at the turn. However, McConnell posted wins at No. 15 and 16 and closed out the 2 & 1 win with a par at the par-3, No. 17 hole.
In the afternoon consolation match, Radford defeatred the Patriots 5.5-0.5. It was much closer than the score with all six matches contested through at least hole 17. Mason's Zack Lauzon battled with the Highlanders Tarren to halve the match giving the Patriots their only scoring.
Mark Folkwein dropped his matched to the Highlanders Conner Hayden, 4-and-3, for Radford's first point on the board. Carbaugh defeated Mason's Kevin Yerks 3-and-2. Ryan Rettberg increased the Radford advantage to 3-0 when he defeated Mason's Kyle Hart, 3-and-2. The other two matches were fought to the end, but Radfords Nick Brediger and Ben O'Geary captured a pair of 1-up vitories against Mason's Wes Liu and Andrew Brenneman.
The Patriots next tournament is the River Landing Intercollegiate in Wallace, N.C. April 11 and 12.
