Softball splits series against Fordham in NYC

BRONX, New York – The George Mason softball team split the series against A-10 opponent, Fordham.  The Patriots move to 13-14 on the season, while Fordham moves to 19-16.

Game 1

The Patriots beat the Rams 3-2 in the first game to pick up its first A-10 victory.  Anna Blessing picked up the start and the win for the Green and Gold, pitching a complete game.  Blessing only gave up two earned runs on seven hits.

After going down 1-0 in the first inning, the Patriots came storming back in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.  Tiffany Webb, who hit a triple to right center to pick up an RBI, started off the scoring for the Patriots.  Casey Price then hit a sac fly to center field to bring in Webb.  After Brooke Blankenship stole second base, Katherine Marsh singled to left field to bring her in.

Those three runs were all Mason needed, as they went on to win a tight first game 3-2.  Blankenship and Webb continued their hot hitting in this game, both finishing with two hits each.

Elise Fortier led the Ram offense with two hits and an RBI.  Gabby Luety picked up the other RBI for Fordham.  Michele Daubman pitched a complete game for the Rams.  Daubman gave up three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

Game 2

The Patriots continued its momentum from the first game into the second, scoring three runs in the first inning.  After a Tiffany Webb single, reigning A-10 Player of the Week, Brooke Blankenship blasted a two-run home run to left field.  After the home run, Casey Price singled to left field and eventually scored on a Lauren McColgan single.

After the game was tied at three going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Elise Fortier homered to right field to pick up two more RBI and take the lead.  The Patriots were unable to recover from those runs, as they would go on to lose the second game 7-3.

Christina Gabriele picked up the start for the Patriots in the second game.  Gabriele pitched five innings and gave up five earned runs on six hits.  Casey Herring also pitched for Mason, giving up two hits in one innings work. 

Elise Fortier had a huge game for Rams, going four for four and picking up five RBI in the game.  Meanwhile, Lauren Quense picked up the win for Fordham.  Quense pitched a complete game for the Rams.

Up Next:  The Patriots are set to host A-10 Rival George Washington in a doubleheader on Wednesday.  The first game will start at 4:00 p.m.
