Men's tennis scored a decisive win over the Howard Bison in their home outdoor opener.
Playing singles first, the Patriots took an early lead with wins at five and six singles. Wesley Wong beat Howard's Nile Kendal at six singles with out dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0 and senior
Taylor Sargent lost just one game in his 6-1, 6-0 win over Nico Sorrell at the five position.
Nick Barker beat Laguna Foster 6-4, 6-3 at number four, and the Patriots clinched the team victory with
Aaron Capitel's 6-3, 6-3 win over Myron Davis at three singles.
At two singles Jimmy Lange was pushed to three sets against Ismael Kaovache. Lange got off to a slow start, but came back from 0-3 to take the first set 6-3. Kaovache turned the tables in the second set winning 6-3. In the third set Lange regained his form and won the match 6-3 in the final set. At one singles
Joe Hill played the Bison's William Jones. Hill controlled the first set 6-4, and Jones took the second set 6-3. In the 10 point super breaker to determine the outcome Jones ran out to a 9-4 lead. With multiple match points against him Hill played some of his most focused tennis, winning four straight points to bring the score to 9-8. The comeback was to be one point short as Jones took the next point for a 10-8 win.
The Patriots won all three doubles matches. At number one Hill and Lange beat Jones and Kaovache 8-2. Sargent and Baine won at number two, 8-4 over Davis and Foster, and Chris Borden and Youssef Khalaffalah beat Nico Sorrell and Nile Kendall 8-2.
"It's great to win our first outdoor match on our new tennis courts" said Coach Quam." We are looking forward to hosting A-10 conference opponent Fordham here on Friday."
The Patriots next take on Fordham in an Atlantic 10 match, at home on Friday April 4 at 4:00 pm.
