PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – The George Mason softball team falls to La Salle in an A-10 doubleheader. The Patriots move to 15-16 on the season, while La Salle improves to 14-14. The Green and Gold came into these games on a hot streak, having won its last seven out of eight.
Game 1
The first game was a pitching duel between Anna Blessing and Alicia Aughton. Both pitchers came into the matchup with a sub-three era. Blessing was able to go all six innings and gave up just four hits and two earned runs.
The Patriots struggled on offense in game one against La Salle. Tiffany Webb, Brooke Blankenship, Angela Maioran, Lauren McColgan, and Heather Ferguson were each able to get a hit in the game. The Patriots best chance came in the fourth when Webb and Blankenship both singled to start off the inning, however, Alicia Aughton was able to retire three straight outs.
Despite Blessing's impressive game on the mound, the Explorers were able to grab two runs in the sixth inning to win the game 2-0. Megan Hodgson provided the offense for La Salle, hitting a two-run home run. Meanwhile, Alicia Aughton gave up just five hits in seven innings work.
Game 2
The Patriots struggled to get the bats going in game two of the doubleheader as well. However, Julia Czarnecki, Tiffany Webb, Brooke Blankenship, Casey Price, and Lauren McColgan were each able to pick up a hit in the game. The Patriots best chance of the game came in the fourth inning again. Mason was able to load the bases, however, Mary Cate Scott was able to retire two straight batters to get out of the jam. Casey Herring and Stephanie Maher both pitched two innings and gave up four earned runs each.
La Salle had an impressive power streak going in game two. The Explorers hit one home run in every inning of the game. Michelle Hagarty had two home runs, while Suzanne Swanicke, Alicia Aughton, and Emily Moran all added a home run as well.
Meanwhile, Mary Cate Scott got the start for La Salle in game two and pitched all five innings, giving up five hits.
Up Next: The Patriots come home for a long home stretch. Mason will take on Coppin State on Wednesday, April 16 in an afternoon doubleheader.
