The men's tennis team beat Morgan State 7-0 in a match played on the indoor courts of Montclair Country club in Dumfries, VA. The Patriots improve to 7-6, while the Bears drop to 2-9.
The Patriots started off strong with a convincing 8-1 win at #3 doubles as Jimmy Davis and Chris Borden beat Jannick Tash and Dimitry Borodkin. At the top doubles match the team of Jimmy Lange and Joe Hill came back from down a service break to force a tiebreaker against Duk Young-Park and Evan Ward. Lange and Hill closed out the match and claimed the doubles point for Mason with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker.
The Patriots carried the momentum into singles play with wins at all six positions. Jimmy Lange was the first to finish with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ty Abraham at #3 singles. Joe Hill, playing his first match at the number one singles claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Duk Young-Park. At four singles Aaron Capitel won in straight sets over Josh Abraham 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the victory for the Patriots.
At the #2 singles Jimmy Davis split sets with Evan Ward. Davis took control early on claiming the first set 6-3. Ward, a quick and consistent player, fought back to win the second set 6-2. In the superbreaker, played in place of a third set, Davis's more aggressive game paid off with a 10-7 win. Nick Barker added another point with a 6-2, 6-1 over Jannick Tash at five singles, and Tanner Baine concluded the singles sweep beating Dimitry Borodkin 6-2, 6-4 at six singles.
“ Morgan State is always strong at the top of their lineup, so for us to win 7-0 is very good. Our one doubles team got down a break early in the match, but they hung in there, and came through in the tiebreaker, and Jimmy Davis had a tough singles match, going to a superbreaker after splitting sets."
Mason will play eight straight matches at home in the next two weeks, beginning with Howard on April 2. Five of those matches will be against Atlantic 10 opponents, including Fordham (4/4), St. Joseph's (4/8), University of Richmond (4/10), George Washington (4/12), and the Patriots will finish the regular season against La Salle on April 13.
