FAIRFAX, Virginia – The George Mason Softball team won their final game of the Cherry Blossom Classic over Colgate 10-4. The Patriots improved to 8-11 on the season with the win.
Offense was the story of the game for the Patriots, who scored 10 runs off 11 hits with eight RBI. Julia Czarnecki had a great game going four for four, scoring two runs on the day. Brooke Blankenship also had a big game going three for five with three RBI and scoring two runs. The Patriots got the offense going early when Tiffany Webb scored in the first off of a Blankenship RBI.
Mason had a huge third inning, scoring four runs starting with Mary O'Connor scoring off of an error by Colgate. Casey Price then singled into left center, which brought in Czarnecki and Webb. Lindsay Merriken kept the offense going with a RBI single to score Blankenship.
The Patriots kept the momentum going into the fourth inning scoring three runs off of Blankenship's second RBI, a Cori Prince RBI, and Czarnecki scoring off of an error. Mason scored their final two runs in the fifth inning with a RBI triple from Blankenship and an RBI double from Price, who finished the game going two for four with three RBI.
Casey Herring got the start on the mound for the Patriots and pitched a strong three and two thirds innings giving up only three hits and two earned runs. Christina Gabriele came in for relief, also pitching well in three and a third innings giving up no hits and only one earned run.
Herring picked up the win for Mason improving her record to 3-2 on the season. Brigit Ieuter picked up the loss for Colgate dropping her to 2-6 on the season. The Raiders were led on offense by Jennifer Martin who went one for three with a RBI. Colgate drops to 4-11 on the season after the loss.
