In Mason men's tennis second match in the Atlantic 10, host Duquesne handed the Patriots a 5-2 loss. The Dukes have won two straight (8-2, 3-0), while the Patriots (3-4, 1-1) dropped their third straight match.
The doubles point was determined by the third match after the Dukes and Patriots split the No. 1 and No. 2 matches. In the No. 2 match, Mason's Taylor Sargent and Tanner Baine defeated the Dukes team of Max Rubin and Rich Robbie in the tie-breaker 8-7(7-5). The Dukes won the other closely contested doubles match at No. 3. The Dukes Matt Slamecka and Harry Walsh defeated Jimmy Davis and Chris Borden in the tie-breaker as well, 8-7(7-3).
Mason won only two of the six singles matches, at No. 1 and 6. In the top match, Mason's Davis and the Duke's Rich Robbe battled through two tie-breakers before the Patriots grabbed the point, 4-6, 7-6(7-2), 7-6(8-6). Taylor Sargents dropped his first set, before coming back to take the second set, 6-1, and the tie-breaker (10-5) to finish the scoring for Mason.
