Geneva, Ohio – Senior Fernando Rubio set a new championship meet record in the 400-yard IM preliminary heats this morning and beat that time in the championship finals on day three of the Atlantic 10 Conference swimming & diving championships in Geneva, Ohio.
Rubio first set the meet record in the 400-yard IM in preliminary heats with time of 3:51.09 and went on to break that time in the evening finals en route to a first place finish in the event with a time of 3:50.68. Fellow Patriot William Clendenin took the second spot in the championship final with a time of 3:54.71.
The men's and women's teams both remain in third and fourth place, respectively, with three-day totals of 408 and 281 points. St. Bonaventure captured the team lead over UMass on Friday and now hold first with 516 points while Richmond remains in first in the women's team points with 434.5 points.
Paige Impink placed third overall in the women's 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in a time of 55.30. Travis Lauri also snagged third in the men's event in a time of 48.50, Daniel Camozzo not far behind in fifth place with a time of 49.02. Joey Kelly earned a top-five finish in the men's 200-yard freestyle with a fourth place finishing time of 1:38.06.
Impink continued her day with a third place finish in the women's 100-yard backstroke championship final (56.01), only to be topped by teammate Melissa Davis who finished second overall in the event (55.86). Nick Guttendorf nabbed another second place finish on the diving board, this time in the men's three-meter event with 301.40 points, 6.3 points behind first place finisher Joshua Koppel of UMass.
The only relay of the evening was the 400-yard medley relay, where the Mason men finished third (3:18.86) behind St. Bonaventure and Saint Louis and the women seventh (3:47.75).
The final day of the 2014 A-10 Conference championships once against begins with preliminary heats at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
