Geneva, Ohio – The men's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Travis Lauri, Jesse Burnley, Zepher Begnell and Joey Kelly set a new team record at the second day of A-10 swimming & diving championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
The foursome broke the previous record of 1:20.62 with a time of 1:20.50 for a second place team finish in the event. First place St. Bonaventure set a new championship meet record with a time of 1:18.48.
The strong finish along with others propelled the Mason men to third place overall after two days of competition with 178 points, behind UMass' total of 243 and St. Bonaventure with 242. The women move to fourth place after day two with a total of 150 pts. Richmond still holds the overall lead with 236.5.
Other highlights of the day include Fernando Rubio's second place finish in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:49.15, only behind a new meet record time of 1:48.16 from St. Bonaventure's Ripley Danner.
Mason also took top-four finishes in the men's and women's 50-yard freestyle. Freshman Sydney Fisher placed fourth overall with a time of 23.55 and while the junior Lauri took third in the men's race with an NCAA B standard time of 20.12.
The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Paige Impink, Jessica Stiles, Steff Maurer and Fisher also took second in their race, completing the relay in 1:32.99.
Day three kicks off tomorrow with preliminary heats at 10:30 a.m.
