As George Mason women's lacrosse steps into a new era, first-year head coach Jessy Morgan announced the 2015 schedule. The Patriots will face four top 50 teams from the 2014 season and two who finished in the top 20, highlighted by a home match with Georgetown on March, 4. Mason hosts eight home matches, including four Atlantic 10 matchups.
"We are excited to play a good amount of in-state schools we are working hard to become one of best programs in the state," Morgan said. "There is a lot of positive energy around our team right now. We can't wait to step on the field and show what we can do."
The Patriots open the season with two back-to-back road games starting with Winthrop (Feb, 20) followed by Campbell (Feb, 22) before opening the home slate with a midweek match against Mt. St. Mary's on Feb. 25. The Mount is followed by the Hoyas on March 4. Georgetown wrapped up the 2014 season at number 18 in the nation after falling 10-8 at North Carolina in round two of the NCAA Tournament.
The Green and Gold return to the road to face Furman (March 10) and Wagner (March 14) followed by a home match against Liberty (March 22) and a trip to Longwood on March 22 to conclude non-conference play.
Mason opens A-10 play on the road, facing St. Joe's March 27 before a meeting with reigning conference champs UMass (March 29). The Minutewomen finished the 2014 season at number 10 in the nation after a 10-4 loss to 12th ranked Loyola in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
"The Atlantic 10 has so many new coaches this year I think its going to be an amazing challenge," Morgan said.
The Patriots then return to Fairfax to open their A-10 home schedule with a Friday night meeting with La Salle (April 3). After a road trip to Davidson (April 10), Mason will host three A-10 opponents in two weeks starting with Richmond (April 12), followed by St. Bonaventure (April 17) before hosting Revolutionary Rival George Washington in the final home game of the season on April 24. Mason will wrap up the season with a road trip to Duquesne on April 26.
The 2014 Atlantic 10 tournament will take place May 1-3 in Washington D.C.
Morgan also announced that seniors Kelli Beard and Kirstin Russell are captains for the upcoming season.
