CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team defeated VMI and Anderson University at the Cavalier Duals in Charlottesville, Va. on Sunday.
The Patriots managed to beat VMI 25-6 and Anderson 35-6 while also falling to preseason-ranked Virginia, 34-6 for an early season dual record of 2-1. Mason defeated both VMI and Anderson last year as well.
Ibrahim Bunduka opened up the day for the Patriots with a 6-4 decision at 125lbs. for the first points of the season. Mason won its first five matches against VMI, all via the decision with wins from Vincent Rodriguez, Sahid Kargbo, Ryan Hunsberger and Greg Flournoy. Matt Meadows provided the only major decision of the match, an 11-2 victory at 197lbs.
Bunduka recorded a 4-0 major decision to give Mason the early 4-0 lead over Anderson in the second dual of the morning. Zachary Isenhour wrested at 141lbs. in the dual, winning his match with a 6-2 decision along with a decision from Derek Dwyer. Flournoy won by major decision (11-3) while Patrick Davis, Jake Kettler and Meadows recorded their first pins of the season for a 35-6 team victory.
Virginia set themselves apart from Mason early, winning the first four matches in the Patriots' final dual of the day. Flournoy finished the afternoon 3-0 with his defeat of Andrew Atkinson (5-3 in sudden victory) along with Kettler who wrestled Ethan Hayes to the score of 3-2.
The Patriots host their first dual of the year on Saturday November 8 when Navy visits the RAC at 1 p.m.
