FAIRFAX, Va. - Mason's William Clendenin has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week and freshman Zepher Begnell and Steff Maurer have earned Men's and Women's Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, as announced by the Atlantic 10 on Tuesday.
Clendenin helped lead the Patriots to a third-place team finish at the Orange Bowl Classic on Friday, January 3 with a time of 4:13.45 in the 400-meter freestyle and a time of 2:08.65 in the 200-meter individual medley, good for third place out of 16. His results earned points for the men's team in both events.
Begnell earned points in three events for the Patriots at the Classic. He registered a time of 24.12 in a tie for seventh place in the 50-meter freestyle along with being a member of the 200-meter free relay (1:36.14) and anchoring the 200-meter medley relay (1:47.92).
Maurer recorded a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter freestyle (59.77) and was a member of both the 200-meter free relay team (1:52.29) and the 200-meter medley relay team (2:00.70) that finished fourth overall. Her performances helped the women to also finish third overall at the Orange Bowl Classic, scoring points in each event.
The Patriots next race on Saturday, January 11 when they travel to Towson, Md. for a dual with Towson University.
