FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's swimming & diving team defeated American University and Army while the men's team also defeated American as Mason, American, Army and Boston faced in a quad meet on Saturday in the Jim McKay Natatorium.
The Boston University women went 3-0 on the day, dealing Mason its only loss by the score of 180-115. The Patriots defeated American 225-73 and Army 175-125 to go 2-1 on the afternoon to move their dual record to 4-4 this season.
The Mason men earned a 231-67 win over the Eagles however fell to Boston in a close contest 164-134, along with a 219-81 point loss to Army for a 5-4 overall dual record.
Melissa Davis led a strong performance for the women's team, earning one first place finish to go with two second place finishes. The sophomore won the women's 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.37 to best fourteen competitors for the gold. She also finishes second of 14 in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.19 and was first off the blocks as a member of the second place-finishing 400-yard medley relay with teammates Shannon Slate, Paige Impink and Steff Maurer (3:55.38).
Slate swam to one of her own first place finishes, touching the wall first out of fifteen in the women's 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.95 with freshman Sarah Brallier not far behind in third (1:08.07). Brallier also claimed first in the women's 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:25.54. Maurer and Impink raced and medaled in their second relay of the afternoon in the 400-yard freestyle relay, snagging first overall with the help of Jessica Stiles and Kelsey Sorensen (3:36.25).
Senior Fernando Rubio took first of thirteen for the men in the lengthy 1650-yard freestyle with a winning time of 16:07.73. He also placed second in the men's 400-yard IM (4:03.88) followed by William Clendenin (4:09.04) and third in the men's 500-yard freestyle with Brandon Nestor right behind him fourth with times of 4:41.87 and 4:43.34, respectively.
Freshman Jesse Burnley had a second place finish in the men's 200-yard freestyle (1:41.74) while junior Travis Lauri had another strong finish in the men's 50-yard freestyle, placing second of fourteen in a time of 21.31. Those two were also part of the second place men's 400-freestyle relay team with Daniel Camozzo and Joe Kelly (3:07.34).
Both squads stay home and are back in action on Saturday, February first for a senior day competition with conference rival George Washington University. The first event is scheduled at noon.
