FAIRFAX, Va. – Junior Travis Lauri won two events and placed second in another, however it was not enough as the men's and women's swimming & diving teams both fell to Towson University on Saturday in Towson, Md.
The men's team was defeated 183-115 and women lost their dual with Towson 235-65. The Tigers won 28 of the 32 on the day to move the men to 4-2 and the women 2-3 in duals this season.
Lauri was the top performer for the men, winning the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 21.36. The junior also joined Joey Kelly, Daniel Camozzo and Jesse Burnley as a first place finisher in the men's 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:09.39. Lauri placed second in the 100-yard butterfly behind Towson's Matt McKenney with a time of 52.20 and third in the 200-yard medley relay with the team of Burnley, Michael Chestnut and Zepher Begnell (1:35.01).
Melissa Davis was the lone first place finisher on the women's side, touching the wall in 2:04.08 to win the women's 200-yard backstroke. Jill King led a group of Patriots that finished second through fifth in the women's 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.01 while Neena Maizels grabbed a second place finish on the blocks with 274.43 points in the women's one-meter dive, only three points behind first place Natalee Szopo.
Mason is back at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax on January 25 when Army, American and Boston come to town for a quad dual. Start time is scheduled for noon on Saturday.
