FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason assistant vice president/director of athletics Tom O'Connor announced today Ted Nagorsen as the head coach of the rowing program. Nagorsen joined the Patriots in 2010 after spending two years at Mercyhurst College.

“I am extremely honored and excited to have received this opportunity to guide the George Mason rowing program,” commented Nagorsen. “As the university transitions into the storied Atlantic 10 Conference, I am excited to work with the coaches around the league and help continue to move this program forward. It is an exciting time for Mason rowing and I can't wait to get started.”

Nagorsen joined the rowing program as an assistant coach in the fall of 2010 before being promoted to associate head coach last season. As the associate head coach, Nagorsen's primary responsibilities included the structuring and executing of the winter training program and spring workouts in addition to the director of recruiting.

Following a two-year stint as a volunteer assistant coach at Mercyhurst, Nagorsen was named a full-time assistant coach in 2008. While at Mercyhurst, Nagorsen coordinated travel, performance gear, recruiting and race procedures. He had served as an admissions counselor at the college for two years before moving into the assistant rowing position.

A Mercyhurst graduate, Nagorsen was a member of the men's lightweight eight that placed second at both the 2004 and 2005 ECAC National Invitational Regatta. He also was on the varsity heavy eight at the 2005 Dad Vail which won the petite final.

Nagorsen began rowing in the fall of 1995 at St. Mary's Preparatory in Orchard Lake, Michigan. He helped his high school rowing program win a national and many state titles. Nagorsen was also a member of the 1998 crew that placed second at the Royal Henley Regatta in England.

Nagorsen began his coaching career at St. Mary's in 1999. He coached the novice program at his high school alma mater, taking them to three state titles and a Midwest championship. While coaching, he continued to train as a competing athlete which helped him develop a better understanding of the sport both as a coach and athlete. Meanwhile, he studied at Oakland University prior to transferring to Mercyhurst in the fall of 2002.

Nagorsen earned a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts from Mercyhurst College in 2005 and is currently working towards a Master of Business Administration at George Mason University. He married the former Marley McKenzie in November 2011. Nagorsen replaces Geoff Dillard who served as head coach for eight seasons before leaving to pursue other opportunities.
