RICHMOND, Va. – The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) recently handed out its top track and field honors for the 2013 season, and George Mason's David Verburg was recognized as the conference's Male Athlete of the Year.
It is the second-consecutive season Verburg collected the honor, capping a successful senior season for the Patriots. At the CAA T&F Championships this season he won both the 200m and 400m en route to being named the male track athlete of the meet. Verburg won the 200m with a PR of 20.69 and picked up his fourth-consecutive 400m title in 45.37, breaking a Towson Unitas Stadium record.
He went on to win the 400m at the IC4A Championships (45.34) and earned First Team All-America honors with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor T&F Championships in Eugene after crossing the finish line with a then-PR of 45.03.
Most recently he competed at the USA Outdoor T&F Championships, finishing in sixth place to earn a spot on the Team USA roster as a member of the 4x400m relay for the upcoming IAAF World Championships to be held August 10-18 in Moscow. In the semifinals of the event, Verburg broke the 45-second mark with a PR of 44.75, currently the seventh-fastest mark in the world.
The award caps an outstanding career at Mason as Verburg was a four-time CAA champion in the 400m in addition to earning several IC4A championship titles and All-America accolades. He was named the CAA Rookie of the Year in 2010, and last season was tabbed the CAA Male Track Athlete of the Meet (Championships), CAA Male Athlete of the Year, USTFCCCA Southeast Region Male Athlete of the Year in addition to participating in the Olympic trials.
In addition to his individual accomplishments, Verburg earned Honorable Mention All-America honors as a member of the 4x400m relay that competed at the NCAA Championships. The relay also won an IC4A title.
"Congratulations to David on his outstanding achievement," said director of track & field Andrew Gerard. "To be recognized as the best in the conference, particularly two years in a row, is a testament to David's hard work and success while at Mason. David's career is just beginning to blossom, including his performance last weekend at Nationals, and we wish him the very best in the future."
