FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team (17-37, 5-15) shutout the Drexel Dragons (15-35, 3-18) in a doubleheader at the George Mason softball complex on Friday. The Patriots took the first game by a 2-0 decision and took the second game 1-0 in 13 innings.
The game was scoreless for four innings before the Patriots broke out scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth. Samantha Barney scored for Mason off a Megan Blank RBI single. Barney had originally reached on a double to right field.
Mason added their second run in the bottom of the sixth. Julia Czarnecki, who pinch ran for Angela Maioran after she reached on a walk, was able to score off a Casey Herring RBI single. In only her third at bat of the season, the hit marked Herring's first RBI this season.
Herring was also awarded her fourth save of the season, Anna Blessing was the winning pitcher and Lauren McColgan was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Patriots. Maddison Timoteo and Jill Popek combined for the Dragons two hits in the game.
The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the 13th inning. With the bases loaded and zero outs, Herring, after reaching on a walk was able to touch home off a McColgan single to left field to end the game.
The Patriots had numerous chances to score throughout the game, even loading the bases twice in extra innings before scoring in the 13th. Mason had a total of 18 runners left on base in the game.
Herring was the winning pitcher for the Patriots. McColgan had three of the Patriot's six hits. Shelby Taylor picked up the loss for the Dragons. Karli Boyer and Hanna Parish, with two hits apiece, combined for half of Drexel's eight hits.
Mason and Drexel will close out this three game series tomorrow at 12 p.m. at the George Mason softball complex. Before tomorrow's game the Patriots will honor their three graduating seniors.
